FAQ
Most DCC Lab studies take approximately 30 minutes to one hour to complete. Some projects may be conducted in person at our lab in Downtown Oshawa. We understand that schedules can be busy, so our research team offers flexible appointment times throughout the week and on weekends to accommodate participants whenever possible.
Every study is unique, so the specific activities may vary depending on the research project. Participants may be asked to answer questions, watch videos or simulations, engage in discussions, complete activities, or share their thoughts and experiences. Before the study begins, our trained Research Assistants will explain the study procedures in detail, review what participation will involve, and ensure that all questions are answered. Parents and caregivers will have the opportunity to review this information, ask any additional questions, and decide whether they would like to provide informed consent for themselves and/or their child to participate before any study activities begin. We are committed to creating a welcoming and comfortable environment where participants feel informed and supported throughout the research process. We also ensure that any children participating receive an age-appropriate explanation of the study and, when appropriate, are asked for their assent to participate.
All projects are designed to be fun for children and teens, and they typically receive a small prize for helping out! Sometimes, we are also able to compensate families for participating with gift cards. Details about compensation will be explained on each study’s consent form. Studies are designed to be interesting for parents, and they typically enjoy contributing to science in this way. And, of course, we get to learn about children’s and teens’ thoughts, perceptions, and behaviours!
Results from the studies you participate in are used for scientific journals, book chapters, and conference presentations. We also develop family-friendly infographic resources with study results. Additionally, we would be happy to send along the final version of our research study results/publications if you email us at dcclab@ontariotechu.ca.
We are happy to arrange visits at times that are convenient for you. If you are interested in learning more about our ongoing projects, as well as future ones, please Contact Us. We will get in touch with you to explain our projects, and you can then let us know if you would like to participate. You can also email us at dcclab@ontariotechu.ca or call us at (905) 721-8668, ext. 3841.
Our Lab is located in Ontario Tech University’s Bordessa Hall at 55 Bond st E, Oshawa, Ontario, L1G 1B2
Our Sincere Thanks
Without the help of families like yours and our community partners, we could not conduct exciting projects that contribute to science and the lives of children, teens, and families! Thank you so much for your interest in our work! We look forward to hearing from you.
